Things to Know Before You Go Cross-Country Skiing - Bergundbahn.com

Cross-country skiing for beginners

Cross-country skiing is a popular winter sport that, unlike skiing and snowboarding, often takes place far from the busy slopes. This sport has two styles: the classic style and the skate style. A big advantage of cross-country skiing is that you have no queues at ski lifts and can enjoy the snowy landscape in peace and quiet. This makes it ideal for winter sports enthusiasts who like a low-stimulation environment. Do you want to go cross-country skiing for the first time and are looking for useful information on technique, equipment and rules on the trail? Then keep reading!

Which cross-country skiing style suits me?

As mentioned, there are two cross-country skiing styles: the classic style and the skate technique. For beginners, the classic style is generally recommended. In the classic style, you move straight ahead and glide your skis through a track that has been specially prepared in advance for cross-country skiing. This track is somewhat like a rail. This technique is considered less tiring.

With the skate technique, you go faster and use the skating step, which is similar to the technique how skaters propel themselves forward. Naturally, this means the skater needs more space. A cross-country ski run, often called a loipe, is prepared in such a way that both forms of cross-country skiing can be practised there.

Renting cross-country skis

As you do not yet know whether cross-country skiing is for you, let alone what technique you like, it is advisable to rent skis first. At a rental they can give you good advice and you can see and possibly feel the differences. Cross-country skis are longer and thinner than ‘regular’ skis. Classic skis are also a bit longer than skating skis. In addition, classic skis have a profile on the bottom to make sure you don't slide backwards and can take decent steps off in the snow.

The right length cross-country ski poles

Cross-country ski poles are also available for hire. These sticks are important because they not only save you a lot of energy, but they also support your balance. Don't be surprised if the poles are very long, as this is precisely what makes it easier to push off. For skate technique, they are even a bit longer for this reason. Opinions vary on exactly how long they should be, but they can also help you with that at the ski hire. As a guideline, you could use the following formulas: Classic cross-country skiing style; your height x 0.85. Skating style; your height x 0.9.

What cross-country ski shoes do you need?

Cross-country ski shoes are different from ski boots and you can rent these too. When choosing shoes, you again need to consider the style you want to ski. Cross-country ski shoes for the classic style are lower and have a flexible sole. This makes it easier to push yourself forward. Shoes for the skating style are higher, with ankle reinforcement and a stiff sole. Because you make a sideways movement when skating, there is a lot of pressure on the ankles. Hence, the shoes should offer extra support in that area. If you can't choose, there are also combination shoes that can be used for both styles. They have a flexible sole, but support the ankles.

For all types of cross-country ski shoes, it is important that the shoes are not too loose or tight and that the heels are held in place.

Dress in layers

In terms of cross-country skiing clothing, the onion principle is the best starting point; in other words, layers. After all, it is an active sport and it will keep you warm. For example, choose thermal underwear that is not too thick and keeps your body dry when you sweat. As for trousers, you can opt for unlined ski trousers or softshell trousers, for example, but you can also opt for real cross-country ski trousers straight away. It is better not to wear padded ski trousers because you will get very hot. The same principle applies to the cross-country jacket. It should be breathable and not too warm. Underneath, you can wear a breathable shirt and fleece jacket. Don't forget to put on a hat or headband and put on thin gloves. Ski gloves are generally too thick, too bulky and don't have enough grip to hold the poles properly while pushing off.

Rules on cross-country skiing

To make cross-country skiing on the track as safe as possible, rules have been drawn up. It goes without saying that you should be considerate of other athletes and that it is important to follow the markings and signs. If there are several tracks, always choose the right track, even if you are in a group. You will then walk behind each other.
Overtaking is allowed on the right and left, and the person being overtaken must give way. Descending cross-country skiers have priority over ascending ones. If you are overtaken or passed, keep your poles close to your body.
Adjust your speed according to your own skills, the track conditions, the weather and, of course, the ‘crowds’. In case of accidents, the track should be cleared as quickly as possible and everyone is obliged to help.

So are you going cross-country skiing for the first time? Then try out which style suits you. Hire special cross-country skis, poles and shoes from a ski rental and don't dress too warmly! Stick to the rules properly and then all you have to do is enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Almost all winter sports areas have groomed cross-country ski trails, so if you want to give it a try, you won't have to look long to find a cross-country ski trail. Have fun!
