Winter sports in Mürren, Switzerland

Winter sports in Mürren - Switzerland - Bergundbahn.com

Ski resort Mürren

Winter sports in Switzerland, that must be really expensive, right? What if I tell you that this is not that bad. Of course, generally speaking, a winter sports vacation is not directly cheap. However, compared to the prices in winter sports countries like Austria and France, the prices in Switzerland are not disappointing.

You can book a week's winter sports vacation Switzerland for 2 people for under €400. But as with all winter sports vacations, the more well-known the area and the more luxurious the accommodation, the more expensive the vacation.

Mürren

The village of Mürren is located in the Bernese Oberland on a plateau in the Lauterbrunnental. From personal experience, I know that it is a cosy, picturesque village with the big advantage that it is car-free. The village is easily reached via either the cable car in Lauterbrunnen, where you then take a train to Mürren, or by the cable car at the back of the valley that delivers you straight into the village.

Schilthorn - Piz Gloria

Mürren has become famous thanks to the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria on top of the Schilthorn (2970m). This restaurant features in the James Bond film On her Majesty's Secret Service. Besides the famous mountain the Schilthorn, you also have great views of the mountains Eiger (3970m), Mönch (4107m) and the Jungfrau (4158m) from Mürren. Using the Jungfraubahn, you can get to the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe at 3454m. Mind you, a ticket for the Jungfraubahn is definitely not cheap!

Winter sports village of Wengen

Opposite of Mürren, on the other side of the Lauterbrunnental, lies the well-known winter sports village of Wengen. This village is particularly well-known among skiing enthusiasts. Every year the Lauberhornrennen, the oldest existing ski race, is held here.

Mürren ski resort

The village of Mürren itself has around 54 km of slopes, including 12 km of black runs, 23 km of red runs and 19 km of blue runs. You will also find plenty of drag lifts, chair lifts and cable cars. The ski area has 2 toboggan runs, a snow park and 2 classic cross-country skiing routes that add up to more than 20km. The Mürren ski area falls under the Jungfrau region, a region with more than 200km of slopes in total. So if you have had enough in Mürren, head across the valley, where you can ski to your heart's content at the ski resorts of Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald.

Pistes and lifts

  • Blue slopes: 19 km
  • Red slopes: 23 km
  • Black slopes: 12 km
  • Sleigh lifts: 2
  • Pedal lifts: 7
  • Commuter cable cars: 5
  • Rack railways: 2

Taking the chairlift to the Schiltgrat, you can take several fun routes to get back to Mürren. If you take the cable car to the top of the Birg, there are both blue and black pistes here that take you towards the Obere Hubel. From there you can go in all directions again.

Transport

Mürren is a car-free village, but public transport in the Jungfrau region is so good that you won't feel the need to take the car at all. If you want to go to Wengen, for example, you take the train and the cable car to Lauterbrunnen and change at Lauterbrunnen station to the little train that goes to Wengen. This train not only goes to Wengen but goes even further, all the way across the Wengeralp via the Little Scheidegg to the winter sports village of Grindelwald. From here you can take the cable car to the First, where you can ski again, or take the cable car to the Männlichen. You'll have a great time here too, with or without skis. And always remember that fantastic view of those 3 giants ( Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau). From the Männlichen, another cable car goes to Wengen. Mürren is a nice village. Perhaps it is a somewhat lesser-known winter sports village, but this actually provides advantages, especially for those people who don't necessarily want to ski in the crowds. Enjoy the views, the delicious food, such as the famous cheese fondue and the snow. Success guaranteed. If you don't want to go on vacation by car, then the train is a good solution. Take the train to Interlaken, this city is just before the Lauterbrunnental, and from there you can reach the valley by train. Public transport in Switzerland is incredibly well organised so this is definitely a good option.
