Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso
The Locarno - Madonna del Sasso funicular connects the old town of Locarno with the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary in Orselina. This sanctuary towers high above Locarno and is the most famous pilgrimage site in Italian-speaking Switzerland.
The 811 meter long funicular takes you from 205m to the mountain station at 378m.
History Locarno - Madonna del Sasso funicular
After permission was given to build the line in 1897, the actual construction of the funicular started in 1904 and was completed in 1906. Initially, wagons with wooden upper frames were used, but in 1958 these were replaced by the current metal variant. The Locarno - Madonna del Sasso Funicular or funicular railway (Standseilbahn) contains 3 intermediate stations in addition to the base station in the center of Locarno and the terminal station in Orselino. The train stops at the Grand Hotel, the Belvedere and the Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary.

Once you arrive in Orselina you can easily transfer to the super-modern Cardada cable car that takes you to the Cardada mountain station at 1340 meters in 5 minutes
