Europe's highest mountain station
Europe's highest mountain station is on the Little Matterhorn. At 3821 metres, a mountain station has been built as part of the Matterhorn Glacier Ride project. This cable car with as many as 25 gondolas, takes winter sports enthusiasts from the Trockener Steg middle station to the summit of the Little Matterhorn. The Bergbahn can take as many as 2,000 passengers per hour up the mountain, and that 365 days a year.
Barren conditions
The start of construction of the new Matterhorn Glacier Ride began on 1 April 2016, and after 2.5 years of working in harsh conditions, the project costing 45 million euros has been completed. Temperatures of -30 and wind speeds of 240 km/h made construction very difficult. Working at almost 4,000 metres means oxygen levels are at 60-80% compared to normal. This affects workers and equipment.
There are great views from the new cable car. In good weather, you can see the Matterhorn. The cable car has a total of 25 gondolas and 4 of them are decorated with crystals. These decorated gondolas have a milk glass bottom, which suddenly becomes transparent after 3 minutes, giving you a spectacular view of the glacier landscape. A return ticket costs between €76 and €97.
