Fantastic views
The cable car in Palm Springs (California), officially the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, is the largest rotating cable car in the world. Thanks to the rotating cabin you get to see an amazing 360 degree panorama.
In about 10 minutes you will be taken from the valley station to the mountain station where you can enjoy fantastic views. You can also enjoy a delicious meal here in the Peaks restaurant. Along the way, the cabin rotates 360 degrees, giving you great views of the valley below and the wilderness of Mountain San Jacinto State Park.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway History
The cable car opened in 1963 and connects the valley station (806m) in the Coachella Valley with the mountain station near the summit of San Jacinto Peak at 2596m. Over the years, the cable car has had to deal with a lot of misery. In 1963, for example, visitors were stuck for no less than 13.5 hours due to an electricity problem. In 1984 a cable snapped and in 1985 a mud wave swept away the entire parking lot. In 2000, the original cabins were replaced by the current rotating cabins.
