Dreh und Trink

Nostalgia in a bottle

For many Austria lovers, a piece of nostalgia: Dreh und Trink! A small plastic bottle in red, yellow, green, blue, orange, pink or brown (cola) with a plastic twist-off cap. As a child, I loved it when my parents had bought some bottles again. As soon as we then went into the mountains to hike, I would get one of those delicious bottles of Dreh und Trink during breaks.

One bottle only has a capacity of 200ml so especially ideal for small children. You immediately recognise the flavour and personally I really like it. At the time, I think a bottle of Dreh und Trink cost just a few shillings, in euros say 25 euro cents. The nice thing is that the bottles are still around, now more than 40 years old. In terms of shape and colour, they haven't changed a bit, only the label. Prices have gone up a bit, but you still don't really pay more than €0.45 - €0.60 per bottle.

Dreh und Trink for the kids

And the kids, they still love it (so do the dads, by the way). My 4-year-old daughter can really look forward to a bottle, a real treat. Recently, I was walking through town and suddenly saw a whole row of red, pink, brown and blue bottles in passing a shop. Needless to say, I then bought several bottles. Nowadays, you can even get the bottles in the Netherlands, not under the name Dreh und Trink but as Twist and Drink. Apparently, an English name works better than a German one. The company Klosterquell Hofer has clearly chosen a different marketing strategy as here the bottle is portrayed more as a 'luxury' product. Whereas a bottle of Dreh und Trink costs around €0.45 - €0.60 in Austria, in the Netherlands you quickly pay more than a €1.
