4,000-metre mountains in the Alps

The four-thousanders, or mountains higher than 4,000 metres. The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, in France, at 4,810 metres. The highest mountain in the Alps remains below 5,000 metres, hence four-thousanders is a term in the Alpine region. In the list below, you will find all the mountains in the Alps that have an altitude of 4,000 metres or higher. In total, these are 90 mountains but this number varies a bit depending on the person you ask. For example, one person does not include the summit on the border between Italy and Switzerland of Monte Rosa while I have now.

The list includes some very famous mountains that any mountain lover will no doubt recognise such as Mont Blanc (4,810 m) in France, Materhorn (4,478 m), Dom (4,545 m) and Jungfrau (4,158 m) in Switzerland and Monte Bianco de Courmayeur (4,748 m) in Italy. There are mountaineers who have taken on the challenge of climbing all 4,000s in the Alps once. What is striking is that in Alpine country Austria there are no four-thousanders at all. The highest mountain, the Grossglockner, has an altitude of (only) 3,798 metres. The 4000s are actually all to be found in the Mont Blanc massif, the Bernese and Valais Alps.
