Gem of Slovenia
Do you love mountain lakes? Are you also looking for an affordable holiday? Then Lake Bohinj is an absolute must. Here you can swim or sunbathe, but also take beautiful walks. It's all possible at this beautiful lake.
Slovenia
Long, long ago, before Slovenia had the euro as a means of payment, I drove back from a holiday in Croatia through Slovenia back to the Netherlands. I was really impressed by the landscape of Slovenia: forested, mountainous, and above all: still so unspoilt. Then I thought: I want to go back to this. Last summer holidays that wish finally came true.
Lake Bohinj
In the middle of a national park of Slovenia, the Triglav National Park, lies Lake Bohinj, which in Slovenian means something like God's country. And it's not hard to imagine how they got there. It is truly a breathtakingly beautiful lake. The water is crystal clear, you can see more than a meter underwater. The entire edge of the lake is undeveloped and offers a challenging hiking trail of several kilometers. The weather in summer is very pleasant, but if it gets too hot, the lake not only offers beautiful photos but also the necessary cooling. There are small beaches all along the lake where there is more than enough space to put down your towel and take a dip in the deep blue water of the lake. Tip: walk just a little further than where the crowds are and there is guaranteed to be a beach for you alone.
To see and do
The national park where the lake is located is beautiful and offers plenty of activities for many days: on the lake and around it you have many options for water sports, canoeing, rafting, canyoning, swimming, boating. The surrounding mountains offer many hiking trails, from intensive to very easy. Would you rather take it easy? There are plenty of very authentic restaurants in the nearby villages where you can enjoy Slovenian cuisine at a very affordable price. You can also take the Vogel cable car up the Vogel for a breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding area. Slovenia is not large, which means that all the country's sights are nearby. This also includes Predjama Castle, an impressive 12th century castle built into the mountainside. The well-known Slovenian village of Bled, of Lake Bled, is located near Bohinj.
Relax
Don't expect bustling cities with large shopping centers or hip nightlife. If you go on holiday to Lake Bohinj in Slovenia, you mainly go to relax.
